Deadline for Registration of Customary Marriages, 31 August 2026
Ensure Your Customary Marriage is Registered Before 31 August 2026
The Municipal Employees Pension Fund (MEPF) wishes to remind all members who are party to a customary marriage that it is essential to ensure that their marriages are properly registered with the Department of Home Affairs.
In terms of the Recognition of Customary Marriages Act, 1998 and the notice issued by the Department of Home Affairs on 29 October 2024, the period for the registration of customary marriages has been determined as 1 September 2024 to 31 August 2026. Members are therefore encouraged to take the necessary steps to register their marriages before the closing date of 31 August 2026.
It has come to the attention of the Fund that some members are in customary marriages that have not yet been registered with the Department of Home Affairs. While the Fund respects and acknowledges customary practices, including payment of lobola and traditional ceremonies, registration of the marriage is necessary to ensure legal recognition and to support benefit processing.
Members are urged to ensure that their marriages are registered, and that proof of registration is submitted to the Fund without delay. Proof can be emailed to pension@mepf.co.za.
The Fund appreciates your cooperation in this regard.
Yours Sincerely,
MR. G. MOTSEPE
PRINCIPAL EXECUTIVE OFFICER
