Important Reminder: Update Your Funeral Cover Form
As we step into the new year, we strongly urge all members to review and update their
Funeral Cover Nomination Form.
Important to note:
Only beneficiaries listed on the funeral cover form are covered. Anyone not reflected on the form will not be eligible for funeral benefits, regardless of relationship.
Life circumstances change—marriages, births, deaths, and other family changes may
affect your nominations. Updating your form ensures that:
- Your loved ones are protected
- Benefits are paid without unnecessary delays
- Your wishes are honoured.
Members are encouraged to submit updated forms as soon as possible.
Understanding MEPF Death Benefits
The Fund provides death benefits to protect members’ dependents and beneficiaries. The benefits differ depending on whether a member belongs to the Defined Benefit (DB) or
Defined Contribution (DC) category.
Defined Benefit (DB) Members:
In the event of a DB member’s death:
- The benefit is calculated in terms of the Fund Rules
- It may include a lump sum benefit payable to beneficiaries and/or dependents.
- Where applicable, spouse and/or child pensions may be provided
- The Board of Trustees allocates the benefit in a fair and equitable manner, taking into account financial dependency, legal obligations, and member nominations guided by
Section 37C of the Pension Fund Act.
DB death benefits are designed to provide longer-term income security for qualifying dependants.
Defined Contribution (DC) Members:
In the event of a DC member’s death:
- The death benefit consists of the member’s accumulated retirement savings (Fund
Credit) plus FOUR times Annual Salary - The benefit is distributed to beneficiaries and/or dependants in line with Section 37C of the Pension Funds Act
- DC benefits are directly linked to the value of the member’s individual retirement saving
plus salary at the time of death.
Members are encouraged to ensure that beneficiary nomination forms are always up to date to assist the Trustees in making informed allocation decisions and allocations are made timeously.
